Airline Network Planning Considering Climate Impact: Assessing New Operational Improvements

نویسندگان

چکیده

The aviation industry has set an ambitious goal of reducing its climate impacts. Accordingly, airlines must balance their plans according to this with financial considerations. We developed a multi-objective framework facilitate climate-aware network design by incorporating the objective minimise flight average temperature response (ATR) when optimising airline network. also assessed operational improvements (OIs) which are introduced improve sustainability in operations. In particular, we considered intermediate stop-overs (ISOs) and lower altitudes as OIs our case studies. analysed impact considering planning operations three different types: one main-hub-and-spoke (KLM), smaller multi-hub (TAP), low-cost carrier (EasyJet). results show that could environmental 10–36% ATR objective. However, would require 8–20% reduction profits. Adopting lower-altitude flying ISO mitigate 27–49% while profits approximately 6%. Our study highlights importance whole demonstrates potential benefits from perspective.

Operational airline reserve crew planning

Airlines are continually faced with the challenge of efficient utilization of their cockpit crew resources. In addition to regular flying crews, some airlines have to maintain significant reserve staffing levels to meet contractual obligations and provide smooth daily operations. Reserve crews are required to cover trips remaining unassigned due to disruptions during daily operations. Airlines ...

Electricity Distribution Network Planning Considering Distributed Generation

One of EU’s actions against climate change is to meet 20% of our energy needs from renewable resources. Given that the renewable resources are becoming more economical to extract electricity from, this will result in that more and more distributed generation (DG) will be connected to power distribution. The increasing share of DG in the electricity networks implies both increased costs and bene...

Integrated Airline Planning

The tactical planning process of an airline is typically decomposed into several stages among which fleeting, aircraft routing, and crew pairing form the core. In such a decomposed and sequential approach the output of fleeting forms the input to aircraft routing and crew pairing. In turn, the output to aircraft routing is part of the input to crew pairing. Due to the decomposition, the resulti...
